Southwestern Road Boring was installing a 6” gas pipeline down the middle of Milam Street in downtown Houston. Milam Street is a 5 lane one-way street that has a tremendous amount of traffic, including buses and commuters.
In order to install the pipeline, Southwestern had to close a number of lanes on this busy street. The lane closures had to incorporate 1250 feet of Milam between Bell and Jefferson Streets. Southwestern called the day before the closure and notified Trench Plate® Rental Co (TPR) of what they needed, but the city had not yet approved the plans. At 9 am of the install day, TPR received the “go” call with the final plans, and had equipment on site by noon the same day and got started on the set-up.
The set up incorporated custom signs, standard signs, barrels, some with Chevrons mounted, and T3 barricades. The challenge was to close some of the lanes, shifting traffic to the left two lanes, or the right hand lanes, while leaving the far right hand lane available to the busses. The traffic set up had to be in place 24 hours a day and satisfy both day and night conditions, as well as the heavy traffic.
By working closely with Southwestern Road Boring, TPR was able to satisfy all of the requirements of the city as well as to enable the timely installation of the pipeline.
